The Qutub Shahi rulers are known to be patrons of art. The Deccan Festival reflects their love for poetry and literature and is held to keep the rich culture of the Andhra Pradesh. The festival is organized by the Department of Tourism of Andhra Pradesh.    

About the Festival:

The Deccan Festival is held in the capital of Hyberabad every year to commemorate the culture of the people of Andhra Pradesh, especially the Qutub Shahi rulers. It is celebrated for five days in either February or March.

There are a number of activities that you should not miss during the festival. These include the poetry reading sessions, performances of the Ghazal and Qawwali singers, dance performances of Kathak and Kuchipudi, and the conventional forms of dance of Andhra Pradesh. A food festival is also organized where you can taste the famous Hyberabadi Nawabi, Deccani, and Andhra cuisine. You will see a number of stalls put up at the venue where craftsmen and traders exhibit and sell their traditional handicrafts.

The festival also includes Bangles and Pearls fair where artisans displays their creations of multi-coloured bangles and lustrous pearly. During this time, the festival becomes alive with all the craft shops and food stalls.

Travel tips: If you are a woman travelling to Hyberabad for the Deccan Festival, do not wear shirts that have plunging necklines and tank tops in order to avoid unwanted attention. Try to wear capris and pants instead of skirts, shorts and dresses. Also, carry with you tissue and mosquito repellent. Beware of the things you buy on footpaths as well. Although sellers the spiciest food or the latest gadget, you will realize that they are made in their backyards.

Beware of pickpockets and go out with an escort during the night. Do not flash your money or jewellery. Do not exchange your money in black markets. Carry small bills. These are some of the safety tips you should remember. Others include drinking of bottled water, bringing stomach medications, and minding what you eat. Never eat at restaurant with no people. Chances are, they serve not fresh food.
