Floriade started as one celebration of the 75th birthday of Canberra and the European settlement centennial in Australia in 1988. However, because of the success of the event, it became a yearly festival since then. Every year, the festival follows a different team attracting over 300,000 visitors every year. Thus, it became the biggest flower festival in the Southern hemisphere.

About the Festival:

Located in Commonwealth Park, Canberra, Floriade is an entertainment and flower festival held every year on mid-September to mid-October. It features extensive display of flowering bulbs integrated with artistic features such as sculptures. The word Floriade comes from the Latin word floriat, meaning to design with flowers. The festival attracts a number of tourists from both locally and internationally. It is considered as the most important event that attracts people to the Australian Capital Territory. It is also referred to as the Australia’s Celebration of Spring. What is amazing about this festival is the fact that it has no admission free.

The festival provides the locals the opportunity to express their talents and skills in art. It also showcases quality entertainment including cultural celebration, recreational activities, musical display, live performances, and artistic displays. It also holds a gnome decorating display and contest as well. A number of schools, homes for the aged, and business participate in the competition.

During the night, a Night Fest is held. It includes comedic, acrobatic, and musical performances. It also includes other forms of entertainment such as cocktail parties, movies, and shopping. Even your kids will have something to enjoy in this colourful event. They have the opportunity to enjoy performances and visit baby farm animals as well as discover the world of reptiles in reptile exhibitions and zoos. You and your family will surely be delighted with the non-stop entertainment offered by the event.

Travel Tips:

When travelling to Canberra, avoid looking like a tourist. Although the crime rate in the city is never too high, you need to take care of your belongings such as money and handbags.
