Germany is a rather religious country hence most of it’s holidays are religious: Let’s give at the German Holidays 2012;

New year’s day- It is a global holiday celebrated to welcome the new year. 1st January 2012.

Karneval or Fasching (pronounced FAH-shing): It is carnival festival.       It was first celebrated in 1843 and the Germans mark it by wearing funny costumes including masks. It is a very joyous festival with fun for the whole family.  This year’s carnival starts on 20th February to 22nd February.

Good Friday- This is a global Christian holiday marking the beginning of a four day Easter festival. It celebrated in memory of Jesus passion, suffering ad crucifixion on the cross. Friday April 6th 2012.

Easter Monday- It is a global Christian festival in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and ends the four day Easter festival.  8th April 2012

“Tag der Arbeit” .This is labor day.  It is a day to celebrate the hard work and strife that the workers have gone through and also appreciate the rights of workers. 1st May 2012.

Ascension Day- it is a Christian holiday celebrated to mark Jesus’ ascension into heaven which happened forty days after     Easter. This year, it will be marked on Thursday 17th May 2012.

Pentecost Monday- it is marked after the Pentecost by Christians. Pentecost is the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples of Jesus as a helper they had been promised. Monday 28th May 2012.

Corpus Christi: it is a Christian holiday marked sixty days after Easter Sunday to honor the Eucharist (The Lords Supper). It is an important festival in the Catholic Church. It is hence marked as a national holiday in some parts of Germany. Thursday 7th June 2012.

Tag der Deutschen Einheit. Unity day: it the national holiday in Germany to commemorate the anniversary of Germany reunification in 1990. It is on this day that goals of Germany unity of the 19th century were achieved. Wednesday 3rd Oct 2012.

Reformation Day- it is a public holiday in five of Germans states  to remember the religious transformation in Germany; German monk and theologian Martin Luther’s proposals were nailed on the doors of a church in 1517. Wednesday 31st Oct 2012.

(Allerheiligen) All saints day: it is a Christian holiday marked in remembrance of the catholic saints and deceased relatives. They go to church to pray for the deceased relatives with lighten candles. Thursday 1st November 2012.

National day of mourning: It is a day marked by mourning and memorial activities by most of the people.  It is a day designated by the government marking the death or funeral of prominent persons in the country.  Sunday 18th November 2012.

Christmas Day: It is a global holiday marking the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians congregate in church to celebrate the birth of their King. 25th December 2012.

Boxing Day :It is a national holiday that is celebrated the day after Christmas where people box up their presents. Wednesday        31st December 2012.

New Years Eve: It is a global holiday to celebrate the end of the year.
