History

            The Olympic Games, London or officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad is scheduled to take place from the 27th day of July to the 12th day of August of the year 2012. London was selected to be the host city of the Olympics during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore where it defeated Paris, Madrid, New York City, and Moscow. London will become the first city to host the modern Olympic Games for the third time.

Many areas in London are redeveloped for the events themed particularly towards sustainability. However, the main focus of the games is the new 200-hectare Olympic Park which is constructed at Stratford in East London. The games will also make use of a number of venues placed already even before London was chosen for the event.

You should not miss the first day of the Olympic Games, London when the opening ceremony will be held and called as the Isles of Wonder. The director of the opening ceremony will be the award-winning Danny Boyle with music directors Karl Hyde and Rick Smith of the duo Underworld. The games will be opened by Queen Elizabeth II alongside with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. During the television coverage, audiences at home will be entertained by a short film of Daniel Craig as James Bond. Another must see during the opening ceremony is Paul McCartney who has announced to perform at the end.

For the first, you will be able to witness women’s boxing with 36 participants to compete in 3 weight classes. However, softball and baseball are no longer included after losing votes for reconsideration. Although formal demonstration sports were dissolved, you can be able to enjoy non-Olympic sports during the games such as the Wushu tournament. You can also enjoy the 45 hectare wildlife habitat at the Olympic Park where 525 bird boxes and 150 bat boxes will be filled. In addition, riverbanks and local waterways will be enhanced for entertainment.

The park near Stratford will attract new tourists to the area during the Olympic Games, London. There is an upgraded Greenway where you can walk and cycle. It will also provide you with a perfect viewing point while the site is still closed for the public. You can also enjoy the water bus that passes from the Limehouse Basin towards the channels near the Olympic Park. Lastly, the closing ceremony will start on the 12th day of august and will include a handover by the mayor of London to the Mayor of Rio de Janiero, the host city of the Summer Olympics in 2016.
