The Salzburg Music Festival is a festival of music and drama which started in 1920. The festival is held in late July for five weeks every year in the town of Salzburg in Austria, the birthplace of the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Before 1920, Salzburg has also been home to many music festivals that are not held regularly. These festivals were organized by the International Mozarteum Foundation. Another festival was planned in 1914 but was cancelled because of World War I. In 1917 however, Freidrich Gehmacher and Heinrich Damisch founded on organization that would establish a festival of drama and music focused on the works of Mozart. In August 22, 1920, the Salzburg Festival was finally inaugurated and is now held every year.
About the Festival
The Salzburg Music Festival is a festival mainly to commemorate the genius of Mozart in his hometown. Musicians and music lovers come here and to listen and enjoy to the music of a musical genius and inspired by him. It is also one of the biggest music festivals with celebrities around the globe come to the beautiful opera houses and theatres to watch spectacular performances.
The highlight of the festival is the performance of the Jedermann or Everyman by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is played on the Domplatz in front of the cathedral with the Salzburg Dom as the backdrop. Many famous theatre actors have played the primary characters of the Jedermann and these roles are still one of the most famous roles where almost every German or Austrian actor looks forward to reprising.
Over the years, the Salzburg Music Festival has been increasing in popularity. This is due to the fact that the festival has incorporated a modern range of classical music thus attracting newer and more audience. Even though the music is based on the work of composers in the 19th century it is presented in a new way which captivates more people from different generations.

The Hohensalzburg Castle, one of the largest castles in Europe has a magnificent view of the whole city which you will enjoy.
The Salzburg Music Festival is an old festival but it has maintained its grandeur and elegance. It has also reinvented itself to cater to its much younger audience.
