It is a lovely car-free district with winding alleys and traditional brown chalets. Transportation in the region is provided by horse-drawn cabs and electric vehicles. Zermatt is surrounded by 36 mountains and is a popular year-round destination. It is famous for hiking in summer and superb skiing in winter.

Skiing In Zermatt

Zermatt, Switzerland is famous for its skiing, especially for its moguls in Triftji. The high altitude of the area makes it possible to ski consistently all throughout the summer. Skiing in the region is divided into four areas – the Schwarzzee, Klein Matterhorn, Sunnega, and Gornegrat. It is also connected to the Italian Valtournenche and Cervinia.

Klein Matterhorn/Schwarzsee

Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee are located on the southern end of Zermatt, Switzerland. These two mountains can be accessed by a gondola and a cable car. They are two of the most difficult areas to ski with because they have exasperating treks through the village.

Sunnegga

One of the four areas for skiing in Zermatt, Switzerland is the Sunnegga Paradise. It is accessed by taking the funicular railway, subsequently a gondola to Blauherd, and a cable car to Rothorn. The topography of the mountain tends to keep the Rothorn sunny and clear, even at times when Zermatt is covered with clouds. From the Blauherd, you can take a gondola and a cable car to get to Gornegrat. This mountain is usually used to train young skiers since it has fewer steep slopes.

Gornergrat

To reach the peak of Gornergrat, you can use the Gornergratbahn railway which is a 29 minute ride. At the summit, you can enjoy dining and shopping at the refurbished restaurant, hotel, and shopping center. Then, you can go to Rote Nase with a free-ride area. However, it can be unreliable since that side of the mountain requires a good snow cover in order to be skiable. The lift in this are usually opens in February and March. However, the cable car is permanently closed with no replacement plans. In order to connect Gornergrat to Rothorn, a new slope is used to replace the lift.

Zermatt is a year-round skiing resort that opens the Theodulgletscher area behind the Klein Matterhorn during the summer. The region is legendary among skiers and mountaineers as it provides an internationally challenging route that takes days to complete.
