The oldest dance tradition in the world is the Indian classical dance. The Hindu mythology is commonly expressed through the Indian dances and themes. The Soorya Music and Dance Festival is conducted every year for ten days in the capital of the Kerala state, Thiruyanthapuram. It often starts on the 1st day of October and ends on its 10th day. It is organized by one of the largest cultural societies in Asia, the Soorya Stage and Film Society. It was founded by Soorya Krishnamoorthy. It includes a number of programs that include film festivals, lectures and talks, painting, theatre, sun and light shows, dance and music festivals, and many more.

You can experience the different forms of dance in the Soorya Music and Dance Festival. There will be the famous Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattan and Bharathanatyam. You can also enjoy the instrumental music of popular artists as well as their classical renditions and, of course, the famous Jugal Bandhi’s.

Well-known musicians and dancers from all over India join in this festival. Famous dancers such as Alarmel Valli, Lakshmi Gopalaswami and many more join with renowned musicians such as Amjad Ali Khan, Zakir, Husain and Bhimsen Joshi. If you intend to stay for a little while in India, on November there is also a dance and music festival organized by Soorya to spot young talents. On this festival, the artists pay tribute to their mentors.

Things to Remember to Enjoy the Festival

To fully enjoy the Soorya Music and Dance Festival, there are some important things you need to know about India. First, traffic is chaotic in India. Vehicles are driven with the drivers on the left side. Traffic rules are not strictly followed thus, you need to be careful when you are walking on the roadsides. You can also drive by yourself on certain cities, provided you have a valid International driving license. However, it is more advisable to take chauffer driven cars that are available all over India. Second, do not pack too many things for this vacation. Just carry things that are disposable such as creams and shampoos. A number of things are available in shopping malls. This provides you with more space to enjoy yourself during the festival.

Since the Soorya Music and Dance Festival is usually held outdoors, it is important to know what to bring during the festivals. Wherever you go, it is important for you to bring with you a face tissue, a hand towel, handkerchiefs, a toilet roll, and a bottle of water. You should also bring your own soap or sanitizer. In order to record the celebration, you can bring with a camera with enough film rolls. To see the celebration more clearly, a pair of binoculars can help you see the little details of the event.

This year Soorya Classical Music and Dance Festival 2012 will be a feast to all classical music and dance lovers all over the world.!
