World Food Day-Oct 16 2012 will be celebrated across the globe in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The theme for World Food Day-Oct 16 2012 will be “Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world”. The theme was chosen to highlight the role of cooperatives in improving food security and contributing to ending hunger.
The World Food Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization Member Countries at the Organization’s 20th General Conference in the month of November in the year 1979. It was the Hungarian Delegation, led by the former Minister of Agriculture and Food of Hungary, Dr. Pal Romany, which played the active role during that session and suggested the idea of a World Food Day Celebration which is to be celebrated worldwide. Since then, this event is observed every year in more than 150 countries. This is to raise the awareness of the issues regarding poverty and hunger.
The Food and Agriculture Organization aims to raise the levels of nutrition worldwide, enhance lives of rural populations, improve agricultural productivity and output, and contribute to the growth of world economy. They give assistance to several nations who are in dire need of food supply such as poverty-stricken countries and especially those struck with famine.
Themes for the World Food Day are different each year in able to highlight areas that require action and common goal and focus. Most themes revolve around agriculture because it is through agriculture that food is cultivated and essentially grown to feed hungry bellies. A large investment in agricultures ensures a lot of food to be distributed among the populace; therefore it is essential in most countries to invest a lot in their agricultural development because of its important role in food supply.
